Paperclips to the Rescue

Have you ever had one of those days when a task is just too darn difficult? For example, you can’t get the last chocolate covered cookie out of the plastic shell that’s holding it hostage. You have two choices. One is to give up and forget the cookie and the other is to find a tool to help you with the task, for example, a paper clip that’s resting on the desk waiting to be used.

If you’re like me, you used the paper clip.

Now, what’s that have to do with leading your team? Well, do you give up at the first sign of adversity, the first challenge, the first “lack of tools”? If so, you’re never going to make it to the lofty title of leader. Actually, you’re also not even going to be a good Team Lead, Supervisor or Manager. You have to find the tools, access the resources and allow your people to use them appropriately. As the leader you may be in front of the group, behind the group, or not even in the work area, and they’ll still be moving forward. Find the tools required, provide them at the right time and use them appropriately.

Now, take a look at your work area. What tools aren’t there for you and your people? How do you get the appropriate tools? Remember, tools can be physical objects or human resources. Use both as required.

Fall Forward to Action

In a few weeks, those of us who live with Daylight Saving Time, will hear the phrase “fall back” so we know how to set our clocks. September isn’t quite fall, or autumn, if you prefer, but it’s, for many people, the start of a new cycle in the year as vacations end, school begins, and new projects abound. I feel refreshed and I’m ready to “fall forward to action.” How about you? What projects are on your plate for the balance of 2014?

In the coming weeks I’ll be telling you more about my pet project – A SIMPLER SYSTEM: 7 Keys to Inspired Leadership. More information to follow.

Garth Roberts, CSP.

A Simpler System: 7 Keys to Inspired Leadership

It’s fall; it’s time to get back to work. After a few months of development I’m about to launch A Simpler System: 7 Keys to Inspired Leadership. I’ve had the program for some time and keep tweaking it to add value. By late September the Launch will happen. So, the big question is, what is your greatest challenge as a supervisor, manager, CEO or entrepreneur when it comes to leading/inspiring others?

Are You Blocking Your Own Leadership?

Most of us don’t like to admit we may be the problem in any situation. In leadership it’s even more difficult to look in the mirror and say, “I see the problem.” Reality is, even if you’re only 5% of the problem, you must fix the 5% first. Your credibility as a leader will be heavily damaged if you don’t acknowledge your mistakes. Your team, colleagues and clients will respect you more and your successes will increase. Don’t be afraid to communicate your errors and definitely tell how you’ve fixed the problem.

My SIMPLER SYSTEM features 7 Steps, with the first one being SELF. Join me on May 28th to learn more about you, and how to make more money and have more time for yourself.

Simpler System to give leaders more time and more money

If you’d like to spend less time at work and have more money when you’re away from work. Let’s talk. For the past 30+ years I’ve been a leader and worked with leaders. OK, I wasn’t always a leader because, like many of you, I started as a supervisor, became a manager, worked into developing my company and, along the way, became a leader.

Also along the way I discovered I was working too hard at this leadership thing. So I’ve taken a step back and reviewed what’s worked and what hasn’t and I’ve devised a Simpler System for Frontline Managers. I love working with new supervisors and middle management because most of them a left to fend for themselves when it comes to leading. One day you’re a worker, the next day you’re a manager or supervisor and no one has taken the time to help you in the transition.

Let me help you as I turn managers into leaders.

How? In my Simpler System workshop I walk you through seven strategies. On May 28th please join me in Calgary. Just click to register – http://garthroberts.com/Training-SIMPLER_System_Seminar.htm

Are you a lifelong learner?

Recently, for the first time in a long time, I conducted a continuing education class in business writing. Eight participants showed up to learn how to improve their business writing skills. As I went around the room to discover why they were in the class, I was pleased to learn how many of them are lifelong learners. Only a couple of people were there because their boss or supervisor suggested they be there. I like it when people come to class because they want to be there, not because they have to be there.

The term “lifelong learner” has been around for a long time and more and more I see people in all types of jobs expanding their education. That bodes well for the workforce. In a previous blog I talked about the concept of having a workforce that’s made up of innovators in North America. We can’t be the innovators if we aren’t continually learning and expanding our minds. How about you, what was the last program or course you took? Why did you take it? How did it help you? I look forward to your comments.
